INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

🔗 What’s an Integrated Management System (IMS)?

An Integrated Management System (IMS) brings together the common elements of multiple ISO standards into a unified framework.

Instead of running parallel systems (and doubling up on documents, audits, and meetings), establish a system that combines multiple standards – whether that’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Health, Safety and Quality (HSQ), or a full Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) integration.

It’s cleaner, smarter, and way more efficient.

What does an Integrated Management System Include?

An Integrated Management System (IMS) includes:

  • Integrated Policy (or separate Policies)
Organisations may choose to develop a single integrated policy or maintain separate policy statements that address the relevant focus areas – such as health and safety, environmental protection, and quality management.

Regardless of format, the policy content must demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to fulfilling compliance obligations, meeting customer and stakeholder expectations, preventing harm, and driving continual improvement aligned with the requirements of the ISO standards.

  • Roles, Responsibilities and Authorities
The IMS defines clear roles, responsibilities, and authorities to ensure that individuals at all levels of the organisation are accountable for quality, safety, environmental, or compliance outcomes – aligned with the standards implemented and the organisation’s strategic direction.
  • Core Management System Elements (applicable across all ISO standards)
Regardless of which standards are included, all ISO-based systems share a common management system structure (Annex SL). This allows integration of key elements such as leadership, planning, support, performance evaluation, and continual improvement.
    • Understanding the Organisation and its Context (Clause 4.1)
    • Understanding the Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties (Clause 4.2)
    • Determining the Scope of the Management System (Clause 4.3)

    • Improvement (Clause 10), including:

      • Nonconformities, Incidents and Corrective Actions (10.2)

      • Continual Improvement (10.3)

  • Operational Processes and Procedures
Operational processes are aligned with the specific standards included in the IMS and cover key activities that affect quality, health and safety, and/or environmental performance:
    • Operational Planning and Control (Clause 8.1), including:
      • Quality control measures and process validation

    • Design and Development (ISO 9001, if applicable) (Clause 8.3)

👉 Why Integrate Your Management System?

Whether you’re aiming for certification or just want a stronger internal system, an IMS helps you manage risk, performance, and compliance across the board — with less duplication and more clarity.

âś… Top 5 Benefits of an Integrated Management System
  1. Simplify Your Systems
Combine policies, procedures, and processes into one logical framework — no more silos.

  2. Reduce Audit and Admin Fatigue
One set of documents. One internal audit program. One management review cycle. Big time saver.

  3. Stronger Risk Management
See the big picture. Align risks across quality, health and safety, and environmental areas to make smarter decisions.

  4. Better Engagement and Accountability
With a single system, it’s easier for your team to understand expectations, follow procedures, and stay involved.

  5. Stand Out in Tenders and Certification
An IMS shows customers and auditors that you run a tight, efficient operation — one that takes quality, safety, and sustainability seriously.
